Boomers on houses
Talking to a pal at work about a Boomer who was telling us about buying a house:
Me: I didn't want to get into an argument with M about the economics of home ownership. But in the research I've done and totaling up what I spend in upkeep, any equity is illusory when you account for inflation. I may break even on the house when I sell it, based on how much money I've had to spend on it through the years.
I also did an analysis of how long it would take for the difference between the total of the initial down payment and subsequent mortgage and tax payments on my house to cost less overall than renting an apartment at $860 per month with annual 5% rent increases. It would take 16 years.
MC: dont even get me started when talking about m's takes on home ownership
she once told me my twice a week starbucks was ther eason i didnt own yet
no maam i dont own yet bc when you bought you house you paid with a paper clip and a note from your dad that your husband was good for the money. my thousand dollar a year habit is not the difference here
she pisses me tf off when she gets going on that shit. youre out of touch sit tf down
When I paid off my mortgage, she told me it was a bad financial move.
drink more boomer kool aid and leave me alone
Me: Like I should have invested all the dough I'd spent paying down the mortgage. Ma'am, the stock market is fake and my house is a real asset
MC: and paying off your mortgage is the accomplishment of a lifetime. your money is not her business. all that should have happened was a thats awesome, im so happy for you
and like I KNOW she got little treats when she was my age. so the little coffee i got when i was in office as a method to make myself get up and come in is not the problem
