Cutting people off
On people saying they can't cut off a MAGA:
Anytime I tell someone to just stop talking to the MAGAs in their family, I’m met with “But that’s my [family relation]! They were normal 20 years ago! Maybe this is just a phase.”
I stopped telling them it’s not a phase. Their loved one’s brain has either been pickled by Fox News or this is who they always were and it’s now OK for them to finally live their truth.
On cutting off someone:
I had to cut off someone in 2020.
Unfortunately, the best way I found to frame it was that the person I was friends with is dead and what’s replaced him is someone so objectionable and devoid of humanity that I can’t talk to him and still preserve my mental health.
As an example, my cousin’s wife died of Covid in August 2020. I sent him a text asking him not to send me any conspiracy theory articles. He sent me one like 20 minutes after I asked him to desist.
When I confronted him and asked what made him think he should have sent that content to me, he refused to apologize. Closest he got was acknowledging it may not have been the best time.
