A cornered, wounded old animal is still pretty dangerous, and moreover is immune to logic. Its instinct is to fight and its behavior is guided by nothing other than that instinct. Even if it ultimately succumbs, it's incapable of any long-term thinking. It can and will do a lot of damage on its way out, because its only concern, ultimately, is its own survival.
