They were grilling hot dogs and large peppers and onions on the grill. The relationship between the bar, and the person grilling, and for that matter between the person grilling and the grill, was not entirely clear: it could have been a matter of momentary circumstance.

But, an inveterate rule-follower, I asked it it would be all right if I took my shots outside, to the stoop, to have with my dogs. There seemed to be no bringing dogs through the doorway into the bar. I sensed it was more a norm than a law but the ambiance encouraged respect for it.
